Refineries use a combination of separation, conversion and treating processes to turn crude oil into marketable fuels and feedstocks.
Distillation separates crude into fractions based largely on boiling range. Conversion processes such as cracking and reforming change molecular structures to improve product yields and properties. Treating removes contaminants such as sulfur compounds to meet product specifications.
